Travel Information
The information below covers the questions that are most useful before travel. The final arrangements relevant to your own route will also be confirmed by the reservations team.
Getting around
Malawi journeys can be arranged by road, by private charter or with a combination of both. Road and boat travel times are approximate and may vary with road, weather and operational conditions. Private-charter timing and luggage requirements are confirmed as part of each journey.
Mvuu transfer
The boat transfer between Hippo View Lodge and Mvuu is $100 per person return. A minimum of four passengers applies. Arrival instructions are confirmed directly as part of your travel arrangements.
Flying
Charter luggage allowances are generally around 15 kg per person, but depend on the aircraft and route. Your flight-specific allowance will be confirmed before travel. Soft-sided luggage is strongly recommended.
Weather and seasons
Malawi’s lowlands can be warm, while the Nyika Plateau is considerably cooler and may have cold evenings or frost. Rain, road conditions and visibility vary through the year. Climate and wildlife patterns do not follow a guaranteed calendar.
Packing
Pack light, comfortable clothing for warm days and cooler mornings and evenings. Neutral colours, a sun hat, closed walking shoes, sun protection and insect repellent are recommended. Bring warm layers and rain protection for Nyika.
A little luggage, a useful contribution
If you have space in your luggage, Pack for a Purpose helps travellers bring items requested by local community projects. Check the current needs list before buying or packing, and confirm the appropriate drop-off arrangements with our team.

Health
Before travelling, consult your doctor or a specialist travel clinic for advice appropriate to your health, itinerary and vaccination status. Malawi is a malaria-risk destination, so discuss suitable prevention with a qualified medical professional.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements depend on nationality and may change. Check that your passport is valid for the journey and confirm whether a visa is required. Travellers who require a visa should use the official Malawi eVisa portal and carry a printed copy of approved documentation. Arriving travellers must also complete the Ministry of Health’s Traveller Health Check.
Confirm the current requirements and apply directly on the Government of Malawi portal.
Complete the official arrival health screening before you travel and save the QR pass to show at the port of entry.
Cover
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. The policy should cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, cancellation, delays, lost luggage and the activities included in the journey.
Money
International guests are required to pay for tourism accommodation, transfers and activities in an accepted foreign currency. Malawi kwacha remains useful for local shops, markets, gratuities and smaller personal expenses. Practical payment guidance is confirmed before travel.
Connectivity
Mvuu Lodge and Heuglin’s Lodge offer fast Starlink Wi-Fi in guest rooms and the main guest areas. At Mvuu Camp, fast Starlink covers the main guest areas, including reception, restaurant and bar. At Chelinda Camp, Wi-Fi is available in the main guest area; Chelinda Lodge has fast Starlink in its main guest area.
Power
Malawi uses 230-volt electricity at 50 Hz with British-style Type G square-pin plugs. Mvuu Camp, Mvuu Lodge and Heuglin’s Lodge have 24-hour solar power. Chelinda uses generators, with charging at designated times: Lodge cabins have evening electricity and daytime charging is available in the main guest areas. The Chelinda Camp campsite has no electricity or device charging.
During your stay
Filtered drinking water is provided, and guests are encouraged to refill their reusable bottles throughout their stay. Share dietary requirements early because specialist ingredients may not always be available in remote areas. After dark, a staff member will accompany guests between accommodation and main guest areas.
Families
Mvuu Camp, Chelinda Camp and Heuglin’s Lodge welcome all ages. Mvuu Lodge welcomes guests aged 16 and above; Chelinda Lodge welcomes guests aged 7 and above. All guided walking safaris are for guests aged 18 and above. There is no published minimum age for game drives, boat safaris, mountain biking or fishing.
Photography
Guides help create photographic opportunities while keeping the experience calm and respectful. Bring protective storage, spare batteries and enough memory. Mvuu Camp, Mvuu Lodge and Heuglin’s have 24-hour solar power; at Chelinda, plan charging around the generator schedule.
Optional
Gratuities are optional and entirely at your discretion. Our teams can explain the simplest way to leave a gratuity during your stay.
