Mvuu Lodge · Liwonde National Park
Meet Kuwala: a new light on Liwonde.
Set at the quiet end of Mvuu Lodge, Kuwala is a handcrafted, spacious new place to stay beside the Namagogodo Lagoon—with its own deck, private pool and an open connection to the water.
There are places that ask for your attention, and others that give it back to you.
Kuwala is the name of the Retreat Suite in Lodge Tent 8 at Mvuu Lodge.
Kuwala was created to be the latter: a private, spacious place beside the water where the pace is unhurried and the landscape remains close. Set apart at the far end of Mvuu Lodge, it is our newest way to stay in Liwonde National Park—close enough to join the lodge for dinner, yet with enough space to feel quietly your own.
Kuwala is a Chichewa word for light, shining and brightness. The name felt right for a place shaped by open views, natural materials and the changing light over the Namagogodo Lagoon.
A quieter edge of the lagoon
Kuwala stands on its own at the edge of the lagoon, looking across the water. Its position brings together two distinct rhythms: the meals, guiding and shared experiences of Mvuu Lodge, and the calm of returning to a place that feels self-contained.
A private deck runs along the front of the suite, creating room to sit outside and take in the setting. The private pool is built into this outdoor space, with the lagoon beyond it. There is no prescribed way to spend that time. It might be a swim after a morning activity, a quiet hour with a book, or simply watching the light soften across the water.
This freedom to pause is central to Kuwala. It is not only somewhere to sleep between activities, but somewhere intended to be enjoyed in its own right.

Built by hand, with a sense of place
Kuwala was custom-built in local wood and thatch, materials that give the space warmth and connect it naturally to its setting.
Inside, the structure remains visible. Timber, woven textures and the high thatched roof bring character without making the room feel heavy or enclosed. The full-width bedroom opens towards the deck, drawing the view into the interior and allowing the inside and outside spaces to work together.
The design is generous but uncomplicated. Rather than filling the room for effect, it leaves space to move, unpack and settle in. The grain of the timber, the texture of the thatch and the filtered natural light do much of the talking.
Kuwala includes an en-suite bathroom as well as indoor and outdoor showers. Fans keep air moving through the room, while a fridge and Starlink connection add practical convenience. Yoga and gym equipment are available for guests who would like to keep moving during their stay—or simply stretch after a day out in Liwonde.
These details are there when wanted, without setting the agenda.

Room to let the day breathe
Mvuu Lodge has always been shaped by the water and by a quieter approach to time. Kuwala takes that character a step further.
Its greater sense of space makes it particularly well suited to guests who value privacy, or who would like their room to form a larger part of the experience. The open bedroom, private pool and broad deck make it easy to spend an unhurried morning or return early and enjoy the afternoon at your own pace.
There is no need to choose between privacy and being part of the lodge. Meals and shared spaces remain close, while Kuwala offers a place to withdraw when the day is done.
That balance also makes it easy to shape each stay differently. Some guests will want full days exploring the park. Others may prefer a slower rhythm, with more time beside the lagoon. Both belong here.

Part of the Mvuu Lodge experience
A stay at Kuwala is held within the warmth, attentive service and low guest numbers that define Mvuu Lodge.
Days in Liwonde may include boat safaris, day or night drives, birding, walking for guests aged 18 and above, community visits and time at the underground hide when it is seasonally available. The exact programme is brought together with the guiding team and may vary with the season and local conditions.
Back at the lodge, meals and shared spaces remain part of the experience. The team is close enough to help shape each day, without making the stay feel formal.
Mvuu Lodge welcomes guests aged 16 and above. This quieter, more personal atmosphere is part of what allows Kuwala to feel naturally at home here.

A new way to stay in Liwonde
Kuwala is new, but its purpose is simple: to create more room for guests to experience Liwonde at their own pace.
It is a place for the moments around a safari as much as the activities themselves—the stillness before breakfast, the return to cool water after being out in the park, the time between afternoon and evening when there is nowhere else you need to be.
For guests discovering Malawi for the first time, Kuwala can be the Liwonde chapter of a wider journey through the country. For those returning, it offers a different way to experience a familiar landscape: more private, more spacious and closely connected to the lagoon.
For our team, it is an expression of what we continue to value after nearly four decades of sharing Malawi: a strong sense of place, genuine hospitality and enough time for an experience to unfold naturally.
