Liwonde & Nyika
Birding
Malawi’s contrasting landscapes create different birding experiences. Liwonde brings together river, reedbed, floodplain and woodland, while Nyika adds high-altitude grasslands and pockets of evergreen forest. Birding can form part of a normal safari activity or be given more time for guests with a particular interest; on Nyika, birds, orchids and seasonal flowers can shape part or all of the day.
The green season in Liwonde brings fresh growth and abundant birdlife. On Nyika, rain returns colour to the plateau with orchids, migratory birds and brilliant green grasslands. Later in the year, returning migrants and seasonal wildflowers create another character. There is no single best season for every guest; the right time depends on the interests shaping the trip.
