The lodge facilities include two stunning wooden dining decks, one at ground level and another sheltered amongst the trees, both offering a panoramic view in the wildlife-filled Mvuu lagoon and of the Shire River. A wooden pathway over the lagoon will lead you to a refreshing swimming pool and sunbeds, nestled between fever trees. Animals love spending time around it too! The path continues, taking you to a relaxing and mindfulness-infused yoga deck built entirely with local materials.

Game Drives

Discover Liwonde’s wildlife up close on one of our 4×4 safari vehicles alongside an expert guide. Experience the sounds and smells of the bush. Explore Liwonde’s exceptionally diverse landscapes. Enjoy bush breakfasts, sundowners and hide viewing excursions. Feel the wind against your face; let the story unfold you as you cruise in an open vehicle in search of the incredible variety of African wildlife that Liwonde offers.

Bush Walks

Lace up your safari boots, put on some neutral colours, grab your hat, binoculars and sense of adventure, and get ready to be at one with nature. Few things rival the thrill of a walking safari, roaming with giants and learning to navigate the bush. Bush walks make for a wonderful opportunity to learn about animal behaviour, tracking, medicinal plant uses and birding, insect life and the different layers of our ecosystems. It’s a real favourite of ours and an incredible way to experience the bush.

Boat Safaris

The Shire River is an enchanting world of its own… home to large pods of hippos, crocodiles, spectacular palm groves, elephants playing in the cool waters, and an incredible variety of birds, it is a photographers paradise! Pre-dawn safaris reveal a myriad of sounds and sights as the bush awakens, but the real magic happens as the sun lowers and the water erupts into vibrant gold and orange hues. The perfect time for a refreshing sundowner, as the engine stops and you slowly glide along the majestic Shire. Unmissable, iconic, extraordinary... a safari on the Shire is an experience of a lifetime.

Hide Viewing

Sit quietly with your binoculars or camera and enter a world of extraordinary, close-up encounters with Liwonde’s incredible wildlife. Best during the drier months, but also available throughout the year, both our treehouse deck built amongst Mopane woodland and our earthy, underground hide provide hours of entertainment for the patient. Your silence will pay off as plenty of action unfolds throughout the day… families of warthog, elusive rhino and hartebeest, sable antelope, herds of elephants enjoying a mud bath and a constant stream of Liwonde’s colorful and varied birdlife. A photographer’s paradise!

Sundowner Safaris

Part of every afternoon activity, the sundowner stop is a well-anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed safari moment. After an exciting afternoon spent in the bush, enjoy Africa’s happy hour with Malawi’s own gin & tonic (MGT) in hand, as the sun slips behind the Western edge of the Great African Rift Valley and the Shire explodes into a myriad of fiery colors. Enjoy drinks, snacks and a chat with your guide - a chance to discuss the day’s sightings as you prepare for the excitements of the night safari ahead of you.

Night Safaris

As a spotter works with your guide to seek out gleaming eyes of Liwonde’s nocturnal activity - jackal, porcupine, aardvark, pangolin, owls, lion, civet and jenet cats and a variety of mongoose to name a few - you’ll also enjoy listening to the different sounds and smells the bush takes on at night. On a clear night, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the great expanse of the starry night sky above you as Mvuu’s remote location within Liwonde National Park has virtually no light pollution.

Bush Dining

How about something really special… nothing better than a traditional breakfast under the trees after an early morning safari, deep within the African bush. Bush brekkies are frequently enjoyed during our morning activities, be it on the boat or along the banks of the Shire. At night, enjoy fire-side chats with your fellow safari-goers and delicious food and drinks in our open-air boma. Special for the thrill it invokes of being exposed to the elements of the African bush, our boma is softly lit by the night sky and atmospheric glass lamps.

Community Engagement

Preserving Africa’s remaining wilderness areas requires community engagement as a fundamental pillar of our vision for sustainable conservation. Liwonde’s peripheral communities have historically faced problems of human-wildlife conflict, and we are proud that today, together with the work of the African Parks Network, Liwonde National Park and its surrounding area is a place in which both people and wildlife can thrive and, better yet, benefit from each other. As grassroots projects, Nanthomba School, located just outside the park boundary, was initiated by Mvuu Camp guides and is a base at which NGO Children in the Wilderness teaches a curriculum based on environmental conservation and the importance of Malawi’s wildlife.

Kiddies Bush Walks

When not out on game drives or boat safaris, we offer short, guided kiddies walks around camp to really engage the youngsters in the wilderness. This is a great way to nurture an appreciation for the little creatures, such as dung beetles and frogs, and to learn to identify animal tracks!

How it works

Choose the lifestyle level you wish to carbon compensate (travel, business, daily life).

Root to Fruit will calculate the level of carbon emitted during your chosen activities.

Based on your carbon emissions, Root to Fruit will calculate the number of trees needed to sequester the total emitted amount of carbon, thus offsetting your activities and leaving you carbon neutral.

You are invited to purchase the recommended number of trees, which will be raised in one of our dedicated tree nurseries in the northern region of Malawi.

Root to Fruit will take care of the rest! Your trees will be planted by trained community members and monitored throughout their growth, to ensure their survival.

Once planted, Root to Fruit will provide you with a certificate that includes the exact GPS coordinates of your trees. Check out the location of your trees online; or better yet, why not plan a trip to Malawi and enjoy this wonderful country while relaxing under the shade of your very own trees?
