Friday 12th May 2017 Malawi: CAWS guide Samuel Lenard Chihana, who is based at Mvuu Camp and Lodge, recently secured the number 20 ranking in tourHQ’s Global Guide Awards 2017 programme, which recognizes the world’s top 100 guides every year. Previously ranked number 90, Samuel has managed to make a significant leap this year, by securing the top 20th position out of 26,000 guiding professionals that were evaluated and ranked from across 208 countries. Samuel is also the only representative from Malawi to be mentioned on the top 100 list.
tourHQ is one of the largest online community networks of guides from all over the world. The community’s top guides deploy their local knowledge to make travellers’ trips and activities more memorable and enjoyable. They ensure that tours, safaris and excursions are interesting and engaging by providing useful information and valuable insights on the natural, cultural and historical heritage of key locations and areas of interest.
In the rigorous selection process for the awards, tourHQ takes a number of factors into consideration. The entire ranking methodology is based on a proprietary algorithm that considers 50 different factors including – reviews received, number and frequency of reviews, seniority of the reviewer, quality of the guides profile, level of engagement of the guide and how they have interacted with travellers and so on.
Samuel is a well-experienced guide who has worked at Mvuu for nearly a decade. He has spent much of his life surrounded by wildlife, is a Wildlife Society member and volunteers in conducting wildlife and bird counts on a regular basis. Although Samuel has a thorough knowledge of Malawi’s wildlife he is an expert on Liwonde’s bird population. He also likes studying animal behavior and works with the entire team of Mvuu guides to submit the monthly CAWS sightings reports. Samuel started his career with CAWS in 2007, when the company took over the management of Chelinda Camp and Lodge in Nyika National Park. He then moved to Liwonde to guide at Mvuu Camp and Lodge and after a brief time away, he returned to his post and continues to conduct guided walks, game drives and boat safaris. Samuel is renowned for being a truly passionate guide who engages and interacts well with travellers from around the world. His warm and outgoing personality and ability to cater to the specific interests of different travellers have received positive reviews time and time again.
