Mvuu Camp

Mvuu Camp overlooks a broad stretch of the Shire River (pronounced Shiree) in Liwonde National Park. The camp is a clever mix of stone and canvas chalets and specially-designed family tents, which total 14 units. An impressive thatched dining and lounge area is situated between two enormous baobabs, and dinners are sometimes held under the stars in a specially constructed boma. A custom-built education and conference centre has facilities for up to 40 delegates or smaller corporate and team building functions.

  • The gem in Malawi’s wildlife crown, Liwonde National Park straddles the beautiful Shire River and its floodplains. The park harbours a surprisingly abundant wildlife population: large numbers of elephant, reedbuck, waterbuck and sable, with a dense population of hippo in the river. Buffalo, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, zebra, roan, eland and rare black rhino have been introduced into “The Sanctuary,” a 4 000ha fenced area within Liwonde. The birdlife is prolific – over 400 of the country's 650 bird species occur in the Park.

  • Liwonde National Park
About 1200 people living outside the park benefit financially from the existence of Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp. CAWS is also involved in logistical support for Liwonde National Park game scouts, helps with infrastructure development, and assists in wildlife translocations and an annual census.

    Nanthomba School
A derelict building with no furniture, Nanthomba School just outside Liwonde National Park has been transformed into a well-run school for 400 kids. Its construction is the brainchild of Mvuu employees who were motivated by the Children in the Wilderness programme and backed financially by an inspired Mvuu guest who created an NH for this purpose: HELP Malawi

    Community Interaction
Mvuu hosts over 2 000 schoolchildren annually from all over Malawi on day visits to Liwonde National Park, encouraging a sense of appreciation and responsibility for Malawi's threatened natural heritage. Children are taught about the importance of conservation.

    Children in the Wilderness Malawi
Children in the Wilderness Malawi began in 2002, since then running camp programmes at Mvuu Camp, as well as Eco-Clubs in the nearby villages, and providing scholarships for a number of children in secondary school.

    Liwonde National Park Aerial Census
Aerial counts of population sizes of different wildlife species in protected areas can serve as useful tool to assist management decisions. The Liwonde National Park (LNP) faces a number of questions that can be resolved in the light of a better understanding of the animal numbers in the Park and their population trends. These include supplying animals for restocking other protected areas in Malawi, assessing the current biomass and stocking rate for various species, and evaluating suggestions for the introduction of large predators to enhance the tourism potential of the Park.

Things to do at Mvuu Camp

What do our guests say?

Again, at Mvuu, the experience was flawless. The first night we were greeted by three elephants right in front of our very comfortable, very attractive chalet. They spent much of the night snacking there. Duncan was our guide and he, too, was well informed, polite, fun, and tireless in finding animals.
